We can't go out so let's stay here
We can't go out so let's stay here

We wait until the shadows
Are high and skies are clear
We run into the water
To wash ourselves of fear

We wait until the shadows
Are high and skies are clear
We run into the water
To wash ourselves of fear

It's seamless
The soulless soul ain't no genius
Bury the plan is the scheme it's
An oldie but goodie we've seen it
We've seen it

Been there before on the team
When the truth was splitting the seam
Citizens hitting the curb
While pockets are filling with green
The wise wait 'til the apple that drops gives them what they need
Not suckle at the teat that taints them just so they can feed
Get to much envy in your bones you'll lose faith
To believe
And lose the power of your power until it's retrieved
Find yourself your soul before they got you on your knees
They cannot take yourself from you
f***uck what time it is
It's foolish wasting time when you don't get what gone give
So take back all the wasted hours you've been blessed to live

We wait until the shadows
Are high and skies are clear
We run into the water
To wash ourselves of fear

We wait until the shadows
Are high and skies are clear
We run into the water
To wash ourselves of fear

We wait
We wait
We wait
Until the shadows

We wait
We wait
We wait
Until the shadows

Are high
And Skies are clear
And Skies are clear
We wash ourselves of fear

We wait until the shadows
Are high and skies are clear
We run into the water
To wash ourselves of fear

We wait until the shadows
Are high and skies are clear
We run into the water
To wash ourselves of fear

Sound Photographers - Shadows ft. Jess Cook (Interview)

Interview

We are very happy to have Sound Photographers again. It’s great to have you here.

Tell us about you.

[Hooz & Indy] In this moment we are grateful. Grateful that we met each other. Grateful for the artists we’ve met and have future collaborations with. Grateful for our health. Grateful that the team we need to reach our goal is forming. 2020 brought many opportunities to let frustration, hate and fear take the place of ambition, love, and focus. Daily, we remind ourselves of this so the world’s current state doesn’t shake our focus on what’s important.

Tell us a little about your new work.

[Hooz and Indy] Shadows is an anthem for all the side hustle artists. It’s for everyone who after a long tiring day can’t wait to get home and get creative. Creative flow recharges us, it feeds our souls, it smothers fear. We took an organic approach to this one. The song is about investing time and love into becoming the best version of you.

What are the main difficulties in being a new artist and how have you overcome it?

[Indy] I think many independent artists would agree that exposure is the biggest challenge we have to overcome. We’re still little fish and the pond gets bigger every day. I’ve felt frustrated at times that our numbers aren’t where I want them to be yet. The key for me is to focus on relationships with specific people rather than my analytics. I feel more fulfilled that way, and it’s healthier. What matters to me is that I make meaningful connections. The flip side of having a smaller audience is that we’re free to experiment and find our voice on social media. When it’s our time to tip, we will.

[Hooz] Having a clear achievable goal, and staying committed to doing the work are big difficulties when starting out as an artist. Everyone goes through the phase of “If I do this, what next?” Where will this take me? Is this worth it? Will I get there? Without a clear achievable goal, the answer is no. From the moment Indy and I met we started writing, recording and releasing music. We were heavily committed to our end goal and kept each other accountable. On days where one of us wasn’t feeling it, the other created the energy needed to complete the days work. When the feelings of “Where will this take me” came up, we’d remember what our goal is and use the emotions to keep creating. A clear, achievable goal is the guideline to your success. So, not having one is like rafting with no paddle. You have no control where the tide takes you, and cannot brace for anything you’re pushed into. This end-goal can come in a flash or take time to find, but once you know what you want it becomes clear. Once you have that goal in sight, the steps it takes to attain it are apparent.

What are your influences for the development of your music? Do you have any kind of influence today?

[Indy] Shadows would not exist without The Eurythmics. Annie Lennox is a huge inspiration of mine, and Sweet Dreams (the album) is my go to car singalong. It’s such powerful music. The artists that I can’t stop listening to right now are WILLOW and Gus Dapperton. They each have their sound, and you can hear who they are. I like really emotional music, songs that are all about the feels. When I listen to a song and think to myself “I know something about this artist now, they’ve shared a part of themselves.” That’s what defines great music to me.

[Hooz] A large influence for the music in this particular song comes from Gorillaz & Dungeon Family. I can have Demon Days and Even in Darkness on repeat easily. The combination of the instrument arrangements are spectacular and the features are top notch. I enjoy artists who blend sounds in unusual ways. My love for instruments came before my love for Hip-Hop, so I like when you can really hear a musician speak through their sound. On the Hip-Hop end Andre 3000, Big Boi & MF Doom are at the top of my list of inspirations when writing lyrics.

What are the fundamental skills for the artist in the current scene?

[Indy] We’ve got to be able to do everything. In order to succeed as an independent artist, you have to be able to conceptualize a project from its beginning all the way through completion. It takes a lot of work and quite a few skills. It’s fundamental to have musical talent and a creative attitude. Something artists often feel overwhelmed by is the time and effort required to curate our image. Hooz and I got lucky here since I went to school for photography. I’m able to produce all of our content and create all the things we need to promote ourselves. It’s a huge leg up for us since it drastically cuts down on the channels we have to pursue. My best advice for someone just starting out is to do everything you can in-house. Get on youtube, sign up for an online class and learn that skill yourself. Ultimately, no one knows what you want like you. In my experience, the less you dilute your vision with white noise from other people, the clearer your authentic self shines through.

[Hooz] It’s crucial to have positive relationships in your life while creating your artist self. Since we’ve put ourselves in the Philly music scene we’ve connected with other artists in the area who have skills to bring to the table. When you find you don’t have a skill that you need, other artists and creatives can add that skill to your team. There are talented people everywhere and you should utilize their skills, just as they should yours. The more creatives you work with the greater your network and exposure will be. Opening yourself up to everyone who knocks on your door is hazardous to you completing your projects by your deadline, but collaberating with the right people will improve your creative process and keep your ideas fresh.

What projects are you working on right now?

Our next song Sunburn is in the oven, we just sent it to our engineer the other day. It is crispy. We’ve got plans for maybe another single after that, but we’re focused right now on the EP. It’s still top secret, but I’ll tell you we’ve got a title and a track list that we’re excited about.

Leave a message for your fans.

Putting time into creating your best self doesn’t make you weak. If you have a goal, envision it, and do what it takes to get there. Find your team and let none break your drive.

Sound Photographers we wish you a lot of success in your career.

And see you in the next interview. Bye!
