Same old story but the girl was a killer
She was banished for her crimes and they billed her
She didn't pay not her way and she was happy for a day
The price on her head was sent
The nail in the wall was bent
A sketch in the hall a trip and a fall
A cell next to mine and no bail for the outlaw
Gingham and biscuits
Singing her wishes to empty dishes

The sky don't fear the thunder
The night don't fear the day
We're going where we going
And we'll get there anyway

The sky don't fear the thunder
The night don't fear the day
We're going where we going
And we'll get there anyway

Use the commotion
Hooz king of the ocean
Riding the waves of his daily emotion
It all clicked with a sip of the potion
Clear view thaws out thoughts that were frozen
A door closing ain't a door closing
It just shows where the current is flowing
All the pros know your nose keeps you going
Sniffing out the best route to your goals yeah
A wave goes out a wave goes in
Through the haze find your ways to stay golden
From your weaknesses stray stay emboldened
Let to much line out you get roped in
The mist in your mind gets it swollen
Cut the fog with the knife of your souls edge
If you jump make sure it's the right ledge
Raise your glass for a toast and remember

The sky don't fear the thunder
The night don't fear the day
We're going where we going
And we'll get there anyway

The sky don't fear the thunder
The night don't fear the day
We're going where we going
And we'll get there anyway

In another life she was a sailor
Free as the wind and wild as the weather
Until one day she obeyed he came and stole her heart away
A line to space and time
A rich forgotten mine
They stood through it all but he had to fall
And wasn't it worth it all for the outlaw
Gingham and biscuits
Singing her wishes to empty dishes

The sky don't fear the thunder
The night don't fear the day
We're going where we going
And we'll get there anyway

The sky don't fear the thunder
The night don't fear the day
We're going where we going
And we'll get there anyway

Sound Photographers - Shade (Interview)

Interview

We have a lovely visit from Hooz and Indy the two who are part of Sound Photographers.

Sound Photographers, tell us a little about yourself.

[Hooz and Indy] Hey FEN! We’re Sound Photographers. We’re bringing you alt-hop meets art-hop from East Falls, Philadelphia. We’ve been making music together since we met in 2017 at a third floor show in Northern Liberties, and its been a hell of a ride. What we love most are the connections we’ve made with other creatives, and this is an exciting time for us because of all the people we’ve been able to work with throughout the making of this record.

We would like to know your history as an artist.

[Indy] I grew up singing along to Ella Fitzgerald in the car and spending endless afternoons at the piano in my childhood home. In college, I was heavily influenced by Talking Heads and Bowie. There’s something about the freedom in their music that really opened my mind up to the possibilities of my own creative expression.

[Hooz] When I was young I took piano lessons from a jazz and ragtime instructor in a second story ramshackle studio apartment. The room had hundreds of records stacked wall to wall, a leaky ceiling that dripped every time the train would pass, and a beautiful light brown grand piano right in the center. He taught me to write in different musical styles and I generated a natural passion for creating music. After two years of his positive influence I arrived for a lesson only to find he’d passed away the day before. Devastating as it was, the skills and expertise he shared with me were fortified. Taking what I learned from the foundation he gave me, I began writing music and lyrics obsessively. Growing up, I was influenced by the individuality and self expression in hip-hop and added that feeling to the songs I was creating. Duke Ellington, Lauryn Hill, and Gorillaz are atop the list of artists who have influenced me. The artist that has inspired me most is Outkast.

Tell us the story of this song.

[Indy] Ahh Shade. Sometimes a song comes together in a night, sometimes it takes months. This one didn’t come together quickly, I’ll tell you that. We write based on feeling, so when Hooz played that *duh duh, da da da de* in our then shoebox of a studio apartment, I said to him “babe, that’s the song.” From there it grew, and we grew with it until we were both ready. Now here we are. The song is about letting past versions of yourself go. It’s about growth and hope in the face of adversity.

[Hooz]

So true. While the song itself came together gradually. The lyrics for the music came all at once. They sprung from desire to emit positivity in a dire time and to remind people to enjoy yourself along the way. We battled finishing this song so throughout the process we had to remind ourselves as well, hah. Each line in the song reminds you to make the most of your life. That we can only control what we can control. To remember the gems that bring the soul to life. My favorite phrase from that verse:

“A wave goes out a wave goes in

Through the haze find your ways to stay golden

From your weaknesses stray, stay emboldened

Let to much line out you get roped in”

Life’s changes come and go like the waves in the ocean. Being able to see your strengths through the fog keeps you strong. Know that having a weakness does not make you weak. Its how you respond to them that defines your strength. Giving the wrong fish to much line makes you the one that’s hooked.

Tell us a funny story from your career.

[Indy] I went to live in San Francisco for a few months in 2018 on a study exchange. Hooz and I were working on an album at the time, which you all will be hearing soon (wink wink). I found an apartment that I thought would make the perfect cozy home studio, and I set up shop. It had natural wood ceilings and soft carpeted floors. It was late that first night, maybe 2 or 3 in the morning, and I was working on a track cross legged on the floor. When I got up, I noticed the dust that jumped up and landed on my white socks. I don’t know how I didn’t notice it before, but the place had fleas. A lot of fleas. I went to stay with a friend that night and tried not to think about the fact that I had forgotten to close my suitcase. I would deal with it in the morning. I woke up early that next day, bought a double pack of bug bombs and headed over. When I bent down to zip up my suitcase, they swarmed me! I had to ditch my socks in the woods, and I had rings of bites around my ankles. I threw my belongings in the trunk of my car, pulled the pin on a bug bomb and started driving. I could feel them in my clothes as I was driving, and I knew I couldn’t bring fleas where I was going. Thankfully, a friend said I could crash at their house in Sausalito. I knew what I had to do. I parked the car, stripped down, pulled that second pin, slammed the door and ran! Through the hills my bare ass went, straight to the bathtub in the basement. It ended up being a blessing in disguise, the house had a beautiful backyard where many songs were written, and I was lucky enough to be able to stay there for a few days while things got sorted.

Also tell a story of overcoming.

[Hooz and Indy] We knew we had to put the music first in order for our message to come through. It was a challenge working together at first. We basically started working on music the moment we met, so as you can imagine our egos clashed at times. As we got to know each other, we realized that we had to put all of that aside in order to get anything done. We have both overcome some major personal blockages in the process. What matters is that we commit to self improvement and music making.

Leave a message for your fans.

Thank you for all your support! We love making music and can’t wait to share more with you in the upcoming year!

Sound Photographers, it was a tremendous joy to have you here. We wish you much success.

And see you in the next interview. Bye!
